Speech Therapy FAQs
Speech Pathologists are experts in communication. Their clinical role involves the study, diagnosis, and treatment of communication disorders, which can involve elements of speech, language, voice and fluency. Speech Pathologists also diagnose and treat swallowing disorders.
Nothing! In Australia, 'Speech Pathologist' is more commonly used than 'Speech Therapist,' and professionals tend to refer to themselves as 'Speech Pathologists' or 'Speech-language Pathologists.' However these terms all refer to a degree-qualified professional who works with clients in diagnosing and treating difficulties with speech, language, social skills, and swallowing.
Speech Pathologists assist their clients with all facets of language and communication including speaking, hearing, listening, understanding, reading, writing, use of voice, and the development of social skills. Speech Pathologists are also experts in swallowing, and are able to diagnose and treat swallowing difficulties (known as Dysphagia) and help clients improve mealtime safety.
This depends on why you are seeing a Speech Pathologist. Broadly speaking, your therapist will work with you to achieve your personal goals. This may involve undertaking an assessment or evaluation of your ability to communicate or swallow. Where appropriate, your Speech Pathologist can look at identifying any potential Augmented and Alternative Communication Technology (AAC) requirements. There are also a range of interventions that may be suitable for you, such as therapy programs, neurological rehabilitation, or education and skills building. Every person is unique, and this will be reflected in your therapist's approach. You can find out more about how Speech Pathologists work here.
This will depend on what the appointment is for, however most appointments will take between 30 minutes and one hour. An evaluation appointment may take longer, sometimes up to 90 minutes.
