Case Study – Power Wheelchair

Meet one of our participants with a great assistive technology outcome.

Mrs. J is a local Sunshine Coast participant.  She was referred to SSRG for a new power wheelchair and pressure cushion through NDIS.

At the time of the referral, Mrs. J had an aged standard manual wheelchair and a foam cushion which was no longer meeting her needs and putting her at risk of pressure injuries.

Mrs. J’s goals were around building her daily independence and begin able to access the community to complete important things like shopping, banking and attending appointments.

Mrs. J went through the SSRG application process and was soon approved by NDIS for a new Power Wheelchair and Pressure Cushion suitable for her needs.

The Occupational Therapist (OT) observed that after delivery of the items, Mrs. J was able to mobilise independently at home and in the community.  Mrs. J’s ongoing health and wellness was also improved with reduced risk of pressure injury and the ability to decrease lower limb swelling.  This was provided through the use of power features within the wheelchair.  Mrs. J was also able to increase her ease of transfers due to the anterior lift mechanism built into the chair.
