The Invisible Symptoms of MS.
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic disease that attacks the central nervous system (the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves), there are over 25,600 people living with MS in Australia and 3,970 Queenslanders living with the disease. This year’s World MS Day theme, Visibility, aimed to (both) spotlight the invisible symptoms of MS (#MyInvisibleMS) and their unseen impact on quality of life with the goal of increasing the visibility of MS. These invisible symptoms, familiar to many people affected by MS, include pain, fatigue, visual problems, numbness/tingling, feeling hot and cold, brain fog (cognitive difficulties), depression, continence problems, swallowing difficulty and balance issues/dizziness.
Our Allied Health team are working directly with local NDIS participants with MS to empower them to overcome the range of barriers that MS creates in their everyday lives. This can include:
• Assistive Technology (including hoists, wheelchairs, etc)
• Air Conditioning
• Mobility Aids
• Home Automation strategies
• Daily Living Aids
• Mobility Aids training
• Home Modifications (simple and complex)
• Home exercise programs
• Review of transfers and support worker manual handling training
• Cognitive / Memory Training and Strategies to manage brain fog
• Functional Capacity Assessment for supports or home recommendations
