Falls prevention & education

The research shows that over one third of adults over 65 fall each year and amongst older adults, falls are one of the leading causes of injury and hospitalisation in Australia. Not only do falls lead to ongoing medical issues over time but can also result in a significant reduction in confidence, safety and ability to participate in daily activities.

Our Occupational Therapists are trained in the nationally recognised 'Stepping on Program' which provides an evidence based treatment approach which has been shown to result in 30% reduction in falls.

The program covers a number of essential areas in relation to falls prevention:

  • Awareness of falls and associated causes and risk factors
  • Excercises and moving about safely
  • Home hazhards
  • Footwear
  • Vision
  • Vitamin D and Calcium
  • Medication management
  • Sleep hygiene
  • Community safety

Our OT's can provide individual assessment and consultation or services can be provided in a group context in conjunction with other health providers to reduce the ongoing risk of falls, injury and hospitalisation.
