Occupational Therapy FAQs

What is an Occupational Therapist?

Occupational therapists (OTs) are degree-qualified clinicians (usually having completed a degree in occupational therapy). OTs are skilled in treating clients who due to injury, illness, or circumstance experience limitations in the how they undertake daily tasks.

What can an Occupational Therapist help me with?

Occupational Therapists help people engage in meaningful activities. Precisely which activities your OT will help you with depends on your particular circumstances and the goals you have identified, but will aim to help improve your quality of life. Generally these activities will fall into the areas of personal care (e.g., bathing), daily living tasks (e.g., cooking), work (e.g., finding a job), community-based activities (e.g., outings) and leisure activities (e.g., going to the movies).

What should I expect in an Occupational Therapy appointment?

Again, this depends on your individual circumstances and goals. Your appointment may consist of:

Assessment or evaluation - Your OT may evaluate your current situation and make recommendations about appropriate interventions such as therapy, rehabilitation, assistive technology or home modifications

Therapy or rehabilitation program - Your OT may implement a personalised program designed to help you work toward your goals. This program will likely be implemented throughout multiple ongoing sessions.

Equipment trial - If it has been established that your needs would be best met through assistive technology (e.g., a wheelchair or modified kettle) your OT will work with you to trial the most suitable piece of equipment.

Skills building - Your OT may have identified that skills building will help you to live more independently, in which case they will develop and implement a skills building program (e.g., meal preparation)

How long does an Occupational Therapy appointment take?

This will depend on what the appointment is designed to help you with. An initial appointment can take up to two hours, but follow up appointments are typically shorter - usually between 30 minutes and 1 hour.
